For many people, Washington means apples. In fact, for many years our state has been the top apple producer in the nation and a top exporter throughout the world. We grow many apple varieties in WA: Red Delicious, Green Delicious, Fuji, Gala, Granny Smith, Braeburn, Honeycrisp, Cripps Pink and Cameo. Apples have been a top crop for decades, as shown in this photo in our Digital Archives. The photo of Red Delicious apples on a branch at harvest time was taken in the 1920s by noted photographer Asahel Curtis. The photo is part of the Conservation Department, Planning and Development Division, Lantern Slide Shows, 1908-1939. This collection includes 256 glass lantern slides that were used in slide shows to promote tourism and immigration in Washington. In addition to apples, they featured the construction of Grand Coulee Dam, the Columbia Basin Project, irrigated orchards and fields and other topics.
