Library News The Cathlamet Town Council worked over its 2010 budget. As a result, Mayor Swart said he would approach the Wahkiakum County board of commissioners to seek a contribution of $6,000 to $7,000 for library operations. (The Wahkiakum Co. Library News Voters are to decide whether to increase their property taxes so the Whatcom County Library System can buy more books, better serve Sudden Valley readers, and keep its branches open for the same number of hours. “It’s up to the voters; they’re going to tell us what kind of library services they want us to provide,” said Joan Airoldi, director for the library system that is comprised of nine branches in unincorporated parts of the county and its cities, as well as the Bookmobile.

Library News Whitman County Library Director Kristie Kirkpatrick reported to the Palouse City council on the Palouse Library and praised the community’s dedication, support, and patronage of the branch as the reason the library excels in performance measures. (The Eagle & Boomerang [Moscow ID/Palouse WA], 10.15.09) Use of public libraries in local cities has increased dramatically since last fall and, in response, librarians are now asking for more funding from Kittitas County government in 2010.

Library News The Timberland Regional Library Board of Trustees will honor retiring TRL Executive Director Jodi Reng at a public open house on Sunday October 18th. Reng has served as executive director for six years and has spent nearly 20 years as the director of multi-branch library systems in Washington state and Minnesota. (Nisqually Valley News [Yelm], 10.9.09) The City of Quincy has $1 million earmarked for the construction of a new library. It’s planning on applying for a Community Development Block Grant to acquire another $1 million.

Library News A group of municipal and county leaders proposed dramatic ideas for consolidating government services during a meeting about how Cowlitz County and its five cities can save money. Officials recommended that cities surrender control of libraries and parks to new metropolitan organizations that would oversee them. The also suggested the adoption of new technologies and sharing staff to reduce costs. (Daily News [Longview], 9.24.09) Woodinville High School has a new library.
