Washington State Library closure

Due to loss of funding, the Washington State Library in Tumwater is closed to the public starting July 1, 2025. We will respond to phone and email messages within one week. Learn more about services beginning July 1, 2025.

Available Library Services Starting July 1, 2025

The Washington State Library research room will be closed to the public beginning July 1, 2025 due to budget cuts. Available staff will continue to provide limited services.

Have materials checked out? 

Please return them to the blue book drop located at the back of the library building at 6880 Capitol Bld. SE, Tumwater, WA.

Reference services

Reference services are available by email at [email protected] or leave a voicemail at 360-704-5221. Please allow up to one week for a response. If you have specific research needs, feel free to contact us—we will do our best to assist you.

Research appointments

Research appointments are suspended until further notice.

Databases

A variety of newspaper databases will continue to be available through our website and can be accessed with your Washington State Library card. Don’t have a card? Apply for a library card.

Interlibrary loan

If you need an item from one of our circulating collections, please contact your local public library to borrow from us using interlibrary loan.

Materials not loaned

Rare and special collections materials, territorial materials, northwest microfilm, copy one of state publications, most reference materials, and some superseded/historical reference materials. If you need information from a non-circulating item, contact us at 360-704-5221 or [email protected]

Newspapers on microfilm

Newspapers on microfilm are available through interlibrary loan. Each library may request up to ten reels per customer per library. Microfilm is loaned for in-library use only.

Federal and State Publication Depositories

Federal and State publications that are available for checkout will circulate through interlibrary loan.
