Library News The public is invited to join the fifth-birthday celebration of the Benton City library building, a part of the Mid-Columbia Library System, from 10-2pm, Saturday, February 19. A non-perishable food item is asked as donation to the Benton City Food Bank as a memorial to Bill Brazelton, a staunch library supporter who recently passed away. (Benton City Bulletin, 2.2011) The Edmonds Carnegie Library, a part of Sno-Isle Libraries, will be celebrating its 100th anniversary with a free event at 5 p.m., February 17 at the Edmonds Historical Society.

Library News The East Side Library was on the list of Spokane Public Library branches threatened to close last year, partly because it has one of the lower usage rates in the city. One reason for the low attendance could be the 2,296 blocked library cards issued from that branch. A card is blocked if there is more than a $10 fine on it. The East Side Library is owed $27,568 in outstanding fines from library cardholders.

Washington State Library News Rural public libraries around the state have put together digital collections of historic items and fascinating community heritage. Access is free and online. These collections were made possible by grants from Washington Rural Heritage, an initiative of the Washington State Library. The grants are funded by the Library Services and Technology Act through the Federal Institute of Museum and Library Services.

Library News Anne Lowe, president of Endicott Community Club, recently presented Caroline Morasch, Endicott librarian, with a check for $5,856 from proceeds of the German dinner and silent auction last November in Endicott. The proceeds will go toward the renovation of the present library in Endicott. Washington State Library News The Whatcom County Library System has been awarded $25,000 to continue the work begun in 2010 in community relationship building between libraries and low-income and minority residents. Under the federal Library Services and Technology Act, the funds come through a competitive process within the state of Washington. One of the cooperating partners is the Washington State Library.

Library News Sno-Isle Libraries are frequently asked if there is a fax machine a customer can use. Sno-Isle has installed self-service fax equipment at the Lynnwood and Granite Falls libraries as a pilot project. Using a debit card or credit fax cash card, customers follow simple instructions to send, not receive, a fax. The cost is $1.50 for the first page and $1 per additional page. (Millcreek View, 1.2011) More than 200 people showed up for the grand opening of the Kelso Public Library January 14.
