James Swan’s memoir describing life among the Makah Indians was prepared at the request of the Smithsonian Institution. Swan reports on various aspects of Makah culture including dwellings, care of children, whaling and fishing gear, government, mythology, ceremonies, and even computation of time. Illustrations of Makah artifacts add rich detail to the account.
