Secretary of State statement in response to social media attacks against ERIC

OLYMPIA — Washington Secretary of State Steve Hobbs responds to former President Trump’s unfounded social media attack on the Electronic Registration Information Center (ERIC):

“If you support accuracy of the voter roll, you support ERIC. Washington state has benefited from ERIC since its Republican secretary of state helped found the multistate partnership in 2012. Attacks on ERIC undermine the hard work of keeping America’s voter rolls up to date and accurate. Every year, ERIC flags thousands of out-of-date voter records for state review, and in 2022 alone helped update 175,279 Washington voter records. This success is due to the collaboration among elections officials in Washington state and across the country who built and grew ERIC into an unparalleled national resource.

“ERIC is a stronger system with every state that joins its shared database. Every departure from this partnership sets back our progress to improve elections integrity across America. Voters and elected officials nationwide must set aside partisanship and support this vital effort.”

ERIC is a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization that helps states increase access to voter registration for all eligible citizens and improve the accuracy of America’s voting rolls. ERIC is governed and managed by its member states.

Washington’s Office of the Secretary of State oversees a number of areas within state government, including managing state elections, registering corporations and charities, and governing the use of the state flag and state seal. The office also manages the State Archives and the State Library, documents extraordinary stories in Washington’s history through Legacy Washington, oversees the Combined Fund Drive for charitable giving by state employees, and administers the state’s Address Confidentiality Program to help protect survivors of crime.
