Secretary of State Wyman is proud to announce that October is National Information Literacy Awareness Month in our state. Wyman promotes libraries throughout Washington, and her office includes the Washington State Library, as well as the Washington Talking Book & Braille Library. “It’s a good month to thank a librarian and a good month to celebrate the gift of knowledge and literacy,” Wyman said. Gov. Jay Inslee has proclaimed October as National Information Literacy Awareness Month in Washington. So why should we celebrate? The National Forum for Information Literacy perhaps says it best: “Information literacy nurtures the development of a critical skill set needed so that any learner and/or worker can thrive and compete effectively in today’s global digital economy. As we move further into the 21st century, we are convinced that information literacy will become the standard-bearer for academic achievement, workforce productivity, competitive advantage, and national security.” Washington joins the more than 23 states and one U.S. territory that have issued similar proclamations. How can you celebrate information literacy? Go on a library’s website and see everything it offers. Visit a library and look at all of the books, magazines and other items available that are chock-full of information just waiting to be consumed by your brain.
