About the Combined Fund Drive

Our mission

To empower Washington public employees and retirees to strengthen their communities through the funding and support of charities.

Our program

The Combined Fund Drive (CFD) is Washington State’s workplace giving program for active and retired public employees. State and higher education employees are invited to give to the charity of their choice through payroll contribution and agency fundraising events.

Facts and Figures

  • Since its inception in 1984, Washington donors have given over $176 million to charities across the world.
  • Each year, over 14,000 active and retired public employees pledge over $4 million to over 1,700 local, national, and global charities.
  • Although ranked 13th in overall population, Washington state stands among the top five giving programs in the nation.

Our Annual Campaign

The Combined Fund Drive program is open all-year round. However, our main campaign runs annually from the beginning of October to the end of December and is administered in over 250 different agencies and higher education institutions.

Ways to Give

Payroll Contribution

Every state employee has an online CFD donor account. A state employee or retiree can give safely and easily through the CFD program in any of the following ways:

  • Monthly Contribution: a recurring amount will be taken out of each paycheck until the employee chooses to stop.
  • One-Time Contribution: a single donation is collected and distributed to the charity of the donor’s choice.
  • Limited Time Contribution: donations will be taken out of each paycheck for a set amount of time as defined by the employee.

Other Ways to Give

  • Personal check or cash that is accompanied by a paper contribution form.
  • Credit card links attached to fundraisers

Our Charities

Though the program currently disburses funds to more than 1,700 charities, there are actually over 4,500 member charities in the CFD. In order to qualify to be a CFD member charity, our charities must do the following:

  1. Be a registered 501(c)3 or 170(c)1 with the Internal Revenue Service.
  2. Have an active registration with the Office of the Secretary of State Charities Program.
  3. Submit a CFD membership application.
The Combined Fund Drive does not endorse or condone the actions of any individual member organization. The program merely acts as a connection between the donor and their charity of choice. To find out more about what disqualifies an organization, download our program WACs by clicking here (PDF). To ensure that the CFD protects the privacy of everyone who gives through payroll contribution, there are very strict policies placed on member charities when contacting donors. Review the Discontinuation of Contact Policy (PDF) here.

Our Volunteers

Without our volunteers, the Combined Fund Drive could not function as a viable giving organization. Over 1,000 active volunteers are stationed in various state offices and higher education campuses across the state, administering the program and promoting charitable giving to their offices.
