State Librarian

The position of State Librarian, as it was with the Territorial Librarians, is politically appointed. Appointees from 1889 until 2001 served at the pleasure of the Governor. With the transfer of the Library unto the Office of the Secretary of State in 2001, they serve under the Secretary's discretion.

She has a Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science from the University of Washington, and a Bachelor of Fine Arts in sculpture and postmodern visual culture from Boise State University.

She has been a public library professional for nearly 20 years, and the last ten years served as the Port Townsend Public Library’s Director of a 113-year-old Carnegie Library.  She previously worked as a public arts professional and librarian in Boise, Idaho. Melody is passionate about access and equity to public institutions such as public libraries, museums, and parks and works to foster environments that support lifelong learning. She loves hiking in the Olympics with her husband and their dogs Gryfin and Rogue (who look like Bluey and Bingo!), creating art, learning to garden and plant trees, advocating for positive servant leadership and the power social infrastructure, and third spaces.
