Registering a 3rd Party Player with BARD

To read books and magazines from NLS’s BARD (Braille and Audio Reading Download) service on a Victor Reader Stream (VRS) or another third-party talking book player, you first need to register the device with NLS.

You do not need to register your smartphone or tablet to access books on BARD Mobile. Refreshable braille displays made within the past few years also do not need to be registered. Learn more about using BARD Mobile on WTBBL’s BARD Help page.

Use the following instructions to register your device:

  1. Go to the BARD website on a web browser. You cannot register your device through the BARD Mobile app.
  2. Enter your BARD account username and password to log in.
  3. Under the “My BARD” heading, select the “Account Settings” link.
  4. Select the “add a purchased player” link.
  5. Verify that your name and address are correct.
  6. Navigate to the “Please select the type of player you will be using” dropdown menu and choose your player from the list.
  7. Select the “Next” button.
  8. Follow the instructions on the webpage to find and enter your serial number.
  9. Select the “Submit player request” button.
  10. BARD will confirm your registration request was sent. You will also receive an email confirming your request. You’ll receive a second email confirming your request has been approved by NLS within two business days, followed by an email from your device’s manufacturer with detailed instructions on how to activate your device.
