The Greatest Show on Earth

When digitizing historical newspapers here at the Washington State Library, advertisements are an endless source of amusement. We find baroquely phrased and lovingly illustrated ads for cure-all potions, fancy frocks, watering holes, and the latest entertainments. I will share some of the standouts in future blog entries to give you a taste of some of 19th century Washingtonian's preoccupations. Today, I will begin with one of America's most beloved and derided traditions: the circus.

Hm, the wording doesn't sound too far off from some disgruntled bloggers we know. In 2008, the hometown Mariners went 61-101, becoming the first team to lose over 100 games despite a $100+ million dollar payroll. It's easy to imagine a particularly bitter writer taking out his frustrations in this way.

Upcoming fall events at the state library

Save the date for the following fall programs at the Washington State Library! An evening program on Wednesday, November 19, at 6:30 PM will feature Al Eufrasio and Jeff Davis, co-authors of Weird Washington, with seating in the main Reading Room on WSL’s 2nd floor. Two brown-bag luncheon programs will also be offered.
