Library News A United Way official will join the Spokane Public Library Board of Trustees in time to decide how to deal with significant budget cuts proposed by Mayor Mary Verner. The Spokane City Council on Tuesday unanimously appointed Janice Marich, the vice president of the community relations for Spokane County United Way, to the city's library board for a five-year term.

Washington Adds 50,000 Newspaper Pages to Chronicling America

The Washington State Library recently contributed another 50,000 historic newspaper pages from nine newspapers to Chronicling America, making Washington State’s contribution to the program a total of 16 titles and 92,000 pages. People can read and research issues from these and other newspapers around the U.S. for free at chroniclingamerica.loc.gov. Library News Why do libraries charge for library cards? The quick answer is that it's one way the library is able to buy the items you borrow. People who want library services but are living outside the tax boundaries will be asked to purchase a nonresident card. (Concrete Herald, 6.2010) The Camano Island Library Advisory Board is accepting applications for its student position for the 2010-2011 school year. Board members are required to attend all regularly scheduled meetings. Deadline for application is Fri, June 18 at 5 p.m.

Library News The Friends of the Longview Library need a logo, and they want the public to design it. The new Friends logo will be used for projects related to the work of the Friends and to benefit the Longview Public Library. The winning logo designer will receive a $50 gift certificate from the location of his or her choice. The winning logo will be announced and displayed at the library in late September.

Library News Bleyhl Community Library director Geraldine de Rooy recently unveiled a proposal to change the current library hours starting in June. During the City Council meeting on May 3, she outlined her reasoning and proposed hours. Currently the library is open six days per week for a total of 33.5 hours. De Rooy is proposing that the library switch to a five-day week and increase the hours of operation to 37.5.

Library News May 10, 1910 was a big day for the people of Chehalis. After years of longing for a city library, a dedication ceremony opened a stunning brick building on the hill overlooking the downtown core. Today, the Chehalis Library is a part of the Timberland Regional Library System. Check Monday's "Today in History" column by local historian Edna Fund for more on the library's opening exactly 100 years ago.
