Library News Spokane’s endangered Eastside Library will remain open at least another year. After a library board of trustees meeting Thursday evening, board members and library administrators said they were certain that the branch was safe for another year. Library News King County Library System’s Words on Wheels program needs volunteers to select and deliver library materials to homebound patrons. Training is provided. A one-year commitment is required. Volunteers must be at least 18, have their own transportation and be able to pass a Washington State Patrol background check. (The Newcastle News [Issaquah], 12.3.10) Help the Anacortes Public Library Foundation add new books and audio-visual materials to the Library’s shelves.

Washington State Library News Denny Ashby Library’s Pomeroy Heritage digital collection has 288 new items documenting local history, including the 1909 photo on Page 1 of teacher Joe Bankson and students in front of the Peola Schoolhouse. The creation of this collection was made possible through a $6,000 grant from the Federal Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) and the Washington Rural Heritage Program, an initiative of the Washington State Library.

Washington State Library News More than 60 library directors from around Washington will be among those congregating in Tacoma December 13-14 for an event to discuss how to make the most effective use of high-speed broadband connections that are being made available through $183 million in grants that will benefit libraries, as well as schools, health clinics, community colleges and various government and non-profit buildings across the state, especially in rural areas.

Library News The merger between LaConner's school and library district has been mothballed for the time being. Governing boards for the two districts decided last week to call off their rush to meet a mid-December filing deadline to include a bond measure on a February ballot to fund moving the library onto school property. The boards decided it makes sense to wait until December 2015, when the library's original $210,000 mortgage, taken on its Morris Street building, will be paid off.
