The schooner Damariscove sailed down the Damariscotta River on December 18, 1849 and arrived in San Francisco Bay on July 12, 1850. Gleaned mainly from four passenger journals, this book provides a first-hand account of shipboard activities including jobs and duties, description of the ship’s rigging, meals, entertainment, constant seasickness, fearsome storms and profound homesickness. The writers of this adventurous story are descendents of two of the seamen who sailed in search of riches from the California mines.
