Managing Policy and Procedure Records
How Long Do Policies and Procedures Need to Be Kept?
Retention depends if the policy/procedure relates to the agency's core mission or internal administrative functions:
| Function? | Retention |
|---|---|
| Agency's Core Mission | 6 Years After Superseded (Archival - Appraisal Required) Policies and Procedures - Agency Core Mission (DAN GS 10002 / GS50-01-24) Sources: State Government General Records Retention Schedule / Local Government Common Records Retention Schedule (CORE) |
| Internal Administrative Functions | 6 Years After Superseded (Non-Archival) Policies and Procedures - Administrative Functions (DAN GS 09028 / GS2024-018) Sources: State Government General Records Retention Schedule / Local Government Common Records Retention Schedule (CORE) |
What's the Difference Between Core Mission and Administrative Functions?
Agency's core mission policies and procedures are those which cover what the agency exists to do.
Internal administrative policies and procedures are those which cover internal functions that support the agency and are likely to be done by most agencies (such as, facilities, finance, human resources, and information management).
