Voters with Disabilities

As a voter with a disability, you can ask for reasonable accommodation, help with voting, and an accessible voters’ pamphlet. Each county has one or more accessible voting centers, where voters can get in-person assistance.

What is an Accessible Voting Unit?

Accessible voting units (AVUs) help people with disabilities vote privately and independently.

AVUs must be wheelchair-accessible and give the voter privacy.

Your ballot appears on a monitor while you select choices by touching the screen, using a select wheel, or by using a tool.
You can use headphones to listen to the words and instructions on your ballot.
Most machines also have a sip-and- puff tools.

Where can I find Accessible Voting Units?

Voting centers have accessible voting equipment ready starting 18 days before Election Day, until 8 p.m. on Election Day.

Voter dates and deadlines

Can I get help with my ballot?

If you cannot fill out a ballot because of a disability, you may choose someone you trust to help you vote. You can also ask two election workers to assist you and mark your choices as you direct them.

What if I have a legal guardian?

If you have a legal guardian, you may still be allowed to vote Guardianship papers will say whether you have the right to vote. Only a court order can declare you unable to vote.

Disability Advisory Committees
- Disability Advisory Committees are made up of people with disabilities, disability community advocates, and service providers. The committees provide county elections departments with input regarding reasonable accommodations that help ensure equal access so that all registered voters can vote independently and privately (RCW 29A.04.223).
