Automatic Voter Registration (AVR)

What is Automatic Voter Registration?

When you show proof of U.S. citizenship during certain services with authorized Washington state agencies, you will be automatically registered to vote or have your voter information updated. For example, this happens when you get an enhanced driver’s license or enhanced ID through the Department of Licensing (DOL).

Many people forget to register or update their information in time for an election. AVR keeps voter information up to date and improves accuracy of the voter roll.

What happens next?

After your voter registration information is processed, you will receive a letter in the mail from your county elections office confirming your voter registration. The letter will contain your voter ID card and instructions to opt out if you wish.

Can I opt out of automatic voter registration?

Yes, your county elections office will mail you a notice with instructions to decline. You must sign and return this notice to opt out.

Will opting out of AVR impact my application for agency services?

No, opting out will not affect the assistance provided to you by that agency. If you believe someone interfered with your right to register, or your right to privacy in deciding whether to register, please contact us.
