"Whooping cough spreading fast in state; vaccinations urged"--Seattle Times
The WA Dept. of Health is urging adults and teens to get vaccinated against whooping cough, also known as pertussis, after a total of 640 cases of the disease were reported in 23 different counties between January 1 and March 31. During the same time period last year, only 94 cases were reported. For adults, pertussis can seem like a mild cold, but the disease is life threatening for infants and young children. So far this year, no one has died from whooping cough, but four infants have died from the disease since 2010. - 04/03/2012

"Grim forecasts spelled out in reports on Social Security, Medicare"--Seattle Times
A new report released on Monday reveals that the largest Medicare fund is expected to start operating in the red in 2024, while the Social Security Trust Fund will be empty in 2033, three years earlier than previously projected. When the two programs start operating in the red they will still be able to pay benefits thanks to their continuing collection of tax revenue, but major cuts would still need to be made to offset the deficits. In the past, the two political parties have been able to come together to extend the solvency of Medicare and Social Security, but no one is sure if that trend will continue in today’s political climate. - 04/24/2012
