FIRST STATE SENATOR 1923-1931

  • Intent on teaching German and earning a master’s degree, Hurn traveled overseas to learn the language and study abroad in 1907.
  • In Germany, she met philanthropist Norman Straus and helped distribute pasteurized milk to prevent infant mortality.
  • Hurn next became an attorney and in 1913 practiced with her father in Spokane.
  • The prohibitionist went on to become the first woman re-elected to the Legislature and served four sessions on the Appropriations Committee.
  • At 65, the world traveler spent years in the Middle East when the State of Israel was created.
