What is the Follett eBook Collection?

The Follett eBook Collection incorporates an easy-to-use method for accessing and retrieving the full text of electronic books with a powerful administrative system. By combining the time-honored traditions of the library system with electronic publishing, the Follett eBook Collection, which is powered by netLibrary, helps school libraries create a richer, more productive learning environment for their students.

Who is a typical Follett eBook Collection customer?

The Follett eBook Collection is only available to K-12 school libraries. Students can access Follett eBook Collection materials from authorized systems within the library or with a user ID and password from a computer outside of the library.

How does the Follett eBook Collection work?

The Follett eBook Collection provides 24-hour-a-day, seven-day-a-week access to the world's most comprehensive collection of full-text eBooks from any location in the world. Visitors to our site can efficiently search thousands of titles simultaneously, finding multiple references for a subject or topic. The Follett eBook Collection also allows students to view eBooks online, check out eBooks online, or download eBooks to their computer. When viewing books offline, students are encouraged to make notes in the margins, highlight the text, and bookmark pages. Students can save their notes, even after the book is returned, and those notes can be reapplied to the text when the eBook is borrowed again.

To select ebooks, customers use TITLEWAVE, Follett's online collection development and curriculum support tool. With TITLEWAVE, registered users can search for ebooks using a wide variety of selection criteria including title, author, key word, subject heading, and reviews. Previewing an ebook from TITLEWAVE is easy just click the preview button and a pop-up window appears that allows you to navigate through a copy of the title you're considering. What types of eBooks does the Follett eBook Collection include?

As of 9/01/00 the Follett eBook Collection has over 20,000 titles available. The Follett eBook Collection is adding approximately 200 - 400 new copywrited titles each week. As of 9/01/00, the Follett eBook Collection includes over 70 publishers:

2. What are the hardware and software requirements for using all the features of the product?

Online use of the Follett eBook Collection has no requirements other than Internet access via a web browser. To use the free eBook reader and download a book to your computer requires Windows 95, Windows 98, or Windows NT.

3. Is remote access included in the price of an eBook? What methods of remote access are supported?

Yes, remote access is included in the price of an eBook. Typically the Follett eBook Collection provides library patrons local access through the library. Remote access is possible from any machine with an Internet connection.

4. Please discuss any methods or assistance you offer regarding remote access patron verification and authentication.

The Follett eBook Collection does not provide any special assistance for patron verification but can work in conjunction with nearly any web-based system that already authenticates patrons. A patron must supply a user ID and password to borrow material.

5. What end user delivery options, such as printing, emailing or faxing results, are available beyond just viewing results on the computer monitor?

Users can print and cut & paste text one page at a time only. To protect copyright and fair use issues, users cannot print large portions of a text

6. What customer training is provided, and at what cost?

Follett eBook Collection customers receive initial training from their Follett Library Resources account manager. Follow-up training sessions are provided as necessary by either the Follett Library Resources Library Service or Technical Support departments. Plus, the entire system has in-depth online help.

7. What customer and technical support is provided, including hours of operation.

E-mail and telephone support is provided 7:45am to 4:15pm CST Monday through Friday. Plus, the entire system has in-depth online help.

8. Describe the statistics you provide, and discuss whether your statistical reporting complies with guidelines developed by the International Coalition of Library Consortia which may be found at www.library.yale.edu/consortia/webstats.html .

The Follett eBook Collection plans to meet or exceed ICOLC's statistical guidelines as they apply to electronic books. Today the Follett eBook Collection supplies a variety of Excel and HTML reports via the library extranet application. These reports include:

9. Describe your pricing structure or formula for the product. If there are additional costs for retrieving full text, describe the pricing for this service. The only cost for the Follett eBook Collection is the cost of each individual eBook.

A.  eBook Pricing

Upon payment of the applicable price for an eBook, Customer will have a license to such eBook, in perpetuity.  All titles in the Follett ebook collection are available with MARC records cataloged by Follett including all the K-12 access points for which we are known.

B. License to eBooks

The applicable purchase price for an eBook allows the Customer to access such eBook via the Follett eBook Collection in perpetuity. Customer acknowledges that the copyright to each eBook is owned by the respective publisher thereof. All Rights Reserved. Any Customer's or Patron's use of the eBooks is governed by U.S. copyright laws and the netLibrary.com Terms of Use.

10.  If a library subscribes to any of your products as a result of this trial, will their future subscription rates continue to reflect any savings or discount they may receive today?

There are no special discounts or trial pricing associated with the Follett ebook collection.

11. What is the minimum participation level (however you care to define it) that would be needed to allow participating libraries to receive a discount? What is the minimum discount for a group buy? Please clarify how you would treat existing library customers with regard to a group buy.

There are no group or consortium discounts or purchases associated with the Follett ebook collection.

12.  Please indicate whether libraries from Oregon, Idaho, Alaska and/or Hawaii would be eligible to participate in the group buying process.
