(Note from the Washington State Library:  In order to participate in the Fall 2000 Washington State Databases Trial, each vendor was asked to address questions the Statewide Database Licensing Committee felt were most critical in order for library staff to evaluate products and vendors.  Please contact the vendor's representative, listed below, for additional information on this product.)


1. Describe the database product(s). If you want us to link to more than one product, provide a unique description for each product. Be sure we know what information belongs with each product. Include information on subject scope, percentage of full-text, dates of coverage, target audience (including age ranges), and how often the contents are updated.

America: History and Life

America: History and Life covers the history and culture of the United States and Canada from prehistoric times to the present. It provides complete bibliographic information and 75-125 word abstracts of the historical literature written from 1964 to the present. Covers journal articles, book/media reviews, and dissertations. Currently it does not include full-text coverage. This database on the web is updated monthly with new citations and entries. With an easy-to-use web interface, America: History and Life is created for undergraduates, researchers/scholars, and history buffs studying United States and Canadian history. Over 90% of the articles annotated were published originally in English-language journals; the foreign language coverage adds an international perspective to the topics and events covered.

Historical Abstracts

Historical Abstracts covers the history of the world from 1450 to the present (excluding North America). It provides complete bibliographic information and 75-125 word abstracts of world historical literature written from 1955 to the present. It includes journal articles and citations to books and dissertations. Currently it does not include full-text coverage. This database on the web is updated monthly with new citations and entries. With an easy-to-use web interface, Historical Abstracts is created for undergraduates and researchers/scholars studying world history. An emphasis is placed upon the inclusion of English-languages titles published throughout the world.

World History FullTEXT

World History FullTEXT provides abstracts and the full-text of the articles abstracted found in approximately 100 history-related journal titles. This reference work is a co-branded history resource featuring selected abstracts from ABC-CLIO's history databases, America: History and Life and Historical Abstracts, with the full text of the articles from EBSCO Publishing. World History FullTEXT is updated quarterly and is available via EBSCOhost. Focusing on historical writing published from 1990 to the present, this resource provides a global view on historical research. It is ideal for institutions with general research needs that want broad access to the full text of the journal articles covered.

2. What are the hardware and software requirements for using all the features of the product?

The Web versions of America: History and Life or Historical Abstracts perform fully on any PC, Mac, or networked workstation with Netscape Navigator or Microsoft Internet Explorer (versions 4.0 or higher) with JavaScript enabled.

World History FullTEXT can be accessed via the web using any PC, Mac, or networked terminal supported by the following web browsers: Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.O, Netscape Navigator 4.0 and Lynx 2.6.

3. Is remote access included for the subscription price? If there are additional charges or requirements in order to offer remote access, please describe. What methods of remote access are supported?

America: History and Life and Historical Abstracts. Remote access is included in the subscription price. Methods of remote access supported include: � IP Address is currently the most popular method of access. The site provides ABC-CLIO with a range of valid IP addresses. � ID/Password distributed by the site to remote users. � ID/Password passed through the URL � ID/Password passed invisibly through a CGI script (ABC-CLIO does not provide the script, but can supply the code to integrate with the site's script)

World History FullTEXT: Remote access is included in the subscription price. It can be accessed by all of the options available for EBSCOhost - passwords or IP authentication. .

4. Please discuss any methods or assistance you offer regarding remote access patron verification and authentication.

America: History and Life and Historical Abstracts: ABC-CLIO provides remote patron access via several options:

5. What end user delivery options, such as printing, emailing or faxing results, are available beyond just viewing results on the computer monitor?

America: History and Life and Historical Abstracts: Users of ABC-CLIO's databases can select/tag specific results for display or the entire result set. In addition to viewing on screen, results can be printed, downloaded or emailed via the user's web browser.

World History FullTEXT: Provides for printing of all or selected results. Results can be printed, downloaded or emailed via the user's web browser.

6. What customer training is provided, and at what cost? Please include "freebies" such as Web-based tutorials, end-user documentation tents, cheat-sheets, etc.

America: History and Life and Historical Abstracts: ABC-CLIO provides detailed web user guides (written in consultation with librarians) for each database. The guides are accessible from the actual database sites and corporate site. Additional customer training can be arranged, as needed.

World History FullTEXT: Complimentary assistance for EBSCOhost includes: Quick Start Guides, a User Support Program of quick reference pieces and training tools, and a Reference Center with information for instructing end-users and librarians. Customized group and individual training sessions for using EBSCOhost are available, if needed. In addition, The EBSCO_web listserv details ways in which products may be used by various libraries.

7. What customer and technical support is provided, including hours of operation? In your reply, please include the phone numbers and e-mail addresses for your support services.

America: History and Life and Historical Abstracts ABC-CLIO offers several forms of customer and technical support. � Content support and help with searching the databases is available via email at [email protected].  Content/searching questions are responded to within 24 hours by a member of the editorial staff who is an expert searcher of the database.

Technical support questions are answered by systems personnel familiar with the structure and functionality of the database. Technical support questions are responded to promptly.

8. Describe the statistics you provide, and discuss whether your statistical reporting complies in part or in whole with the guidelines developed by the International Coalition of Library Consortia which may be found at www.library.yale.edu/consortia/webstats.html .

America: History and Life and Historical Abstracts: Monthly usage reports are emailed to the designated contacts for the database. The ABC-CLIO usage reports conform to the ICOLC guidelines and include: � Total number of sessions with breakdown by time of day � Total number of searches by database � Total number of downloads with breakdown by ASCII (printing or saving) and Email � User name/password and IP activity

World History FullTEXT: Multiple options for usage statistics are available.

9. Describe your pricing structure or formula for the product. If there are additional costs for retrieving full text, describe the pricing for this service. America: History and Life and Historical Abstracts: Our pricing structure is based on the number of simultaneous users and the materials budget of the institution. An institution with a materials budget (including books, serials, and bindings) of less than $300,000 qualifies for our small college rate. High school pricing is the same as community colleges.

10. If a library subscribes to any of your products as a result of this trial, will their future subscription rates continue to reflect any savings or discount they may receive today?

America: History and Life and Historical Abstracts: The special 20% discount for new orders received during this trial will apply for the first year of the subscription. Subsequent years will be charged at the appropriate renewal rates.

World History FullTEXT: No discounts off of list pricing will be offered for this trial.

11. What is the minimum participation level (however you care to define it) that would be needed to allow participating libraries to receive a discount? What is the minimum discount for a group buy? How will you treat existing library customers with regard to a group buy?

America: History and Life and Historical Abstracts: There is no minimum participation level for new subscribers to receive the special 20% discount. There is no set minimum discount for a group buy. Group discounts are determined on an individual basis dependent on the number of interested schools. Libraries with existing subscriptions will be eligible for group discounts only when pre-determined new participation levels are reached.

World History FullTEXT: There is no minimum participation level required.

12. Please indicate whether libraries from Oregon, Idaho, Alaska and/or Hawaii are eligible to participate in the group buying process. Again, the fiscal and contracting relationship will be between each vendor and library. The Washington State Library will help determine if the criteria for a group discount has been met.
