CINAHL DIRECT

The CINAHL database is a bibliographic database covering the nursing and allied health literature from 1982 to the present. It is updated monthly. The database also covers alternative therapies, chiropractic, podiatry, consumer health and patient education information, health services administration, health sciences librarianship, and biomedicine. It focuses on the psychosocial aspects of illness, adolescent and elderly care, AIDS, cancer, aging, etc. The database is used by nursing and allied health students and professionals, librarians, consumers and patients, medical students, residents, physicians, chiropractors, and high school students (K-12).

The database has unique records and features. Original Cinahl records, most of which include full text, are research instruments, JCAHO accreditation and competency records, drug records, website descriptions, legal cases, and clinical innovation records. Cited references are included for most nursing and allied health journal titles. A table of contents field details chapters within a book, papers presented at a conference, etc. In addition to the original material the database covers books, book chapters, pamphlets, pamphlet chapters, journal articles, proceedings, dissertations, audiovisuals, software, critical pathways, military masters theses, and government publications. Of the 519,282 records in the database 30% have abstracts and 1.9% have full text. In addition to the full text of the original Cinahl records mentioned above there is full text for critical pathways, government publications, patient education information, state nursing journals, and newsletters.
