Washington State CINAHL Evaluation Spring 2000

Vendor Information Chart

The Cumulated Index to Nursing and Allied Health, 1982- present, is updated monthly. Coverage is provided for about 1200 journals, books, pamphlets, theses, and other sources in the nursing and allied health disciplines. Of the 500,000+ records in CINAHL, 30% have abstracts and 1.9% have full text. In addition, CINAHL Direct, Ebsco, Ovid, SilverPlatter link to the full text of some state nursing journals. (See list of state nursing journals.) Bell Howell is the only vendor providing substantial additional full text from within the database, although other vendors are linking to full text through both their own databases, and from third party publisher databases.

Bell & Howell, Ebsco, and OCLC all employ the familiar multi-searchbox in their Advanced Search screens that allows for field searching and limiting. SilverPlatter does something similar with its Search Builder software. The default search of both CINAHL Direct and Ovid links to the subject thesaurus. Aries uses fuzzy logic and relevancy ranking.

Ease of Use

Two basic types of searching are available. The default search is a subject search that links to the CINAHL thesaurus. Can explode thesaurus terms. Users can also Search Other Fields, with 24 to choose from, and limit to Specific Interest Categories. Can limit by age groups, publication type, full text, journal subset.

+ Clean looking interface, can use past searches, display search history, exploit subject headings.

- Not as intuitive or flexible as some systems. Difficult to do a simple keyword search. Also, WA State trial has access to what is described as CINAHL Demo, which apparently has no full text available.
