2002 Serving Cultural Diversity Awards

02-CD-02 Award: $31,550

Organization: R.A. Long High School, Longview School District

Abstract: To establish a multi-faceted diversity celebration for all of R.A. Long High School's ethnic populations, present lectures and performances, establish a world storytelling troupe, create heritage video projects, provide information literacy instruction; teach parents how to share their culture with their children; and assist with homework and translating.

02-CD-03 Award: $50,000

Organization: Bellevue Community College

Abstract: The BCC Library Media Center (LMC) Cultural Diversity project will significantly enhance services, materials, and activities to increase library patronage by a growing culturally diverse student body and Eastside community. Training of LMC staff, BCC faculty members, and community-based staff and volunteers will assist in overcoming diversity and language barriers and result in culturally infused programs/classes utilizing enhanced LMC resources.

02-CD-04 Award: $19,854

Organization: Asotin County Library

Abstract: A community analysis of Spanish-speakers in Asotin County revealed problems with isolation from the community and employability. This project will provide access to library services, programming, and resources in a variety of formats for Spanish-speaking people in Asotin County, with a specific emphasis on addressing these problems.

02-CD-06 Award: $34,660

Organization: Everett Public Library

Abstract: The project will improve services to new immigrants by creating a promotional flyer for wide distribution; and translating the flyer, policy brochure, and card application into four languages. Additional foreign language materials will be purchased, a rotating collection will created, and will provide a variety of outreach efforts and staff training.

02-CD-08 Award: $43,838

Organization: Fort Vancouver Regional Library

Abstract: The !Bienvenidos! Es Su Biblioteca project will allow FVRL to better serve the estimated 7,2000 Spanish-speaking district residents by expanding the collection, conducting a needs assessment of the Latino and Spanish-speaking population, providing staff training, and translating library publications into Spanish.

02-CD-10 Award: $50,000

Organization: Sno-Isle Regional Library

Abstract: This project will provide the means to assess the needs of diverse populations in Snohomish and Island counties, develop programs and services meeting these needs, train staff to work more effectively, and market the library's services to the diverse populations identified.

02-CD-15 Award: $45,098

Organization: Spokane Public Library

Abstract: Spokane Public Library will partner with the AHANA Business and Professional Association of Spokane in effecting a layered method of addressing the needs of constituent minority populations. This approach will employ a needs assessment process, programming by and for minorities, and materials acquisition.

02-CD-17 Award: $50,000

Organization: Seattle Public Schools

Abstract: The project will enable the school library staff to more skillfully serve the culturally diverse student population (composed of 2% American Indian; 11% Asian; 68% African American, 15% Latino, and 5% Caucasian) by providing culturally diverse activities, technology, and library materials.
