Land Claim Law passed by Congress
On September 27, 1850, Congress passed the Donation Land Law. It provided that a survey be made of all public land in Oregon (including present-day Washington) and grants of 320 acres of land to be given to any citizen willing to settle the land (married settlers could claim 640 acres). Not surprisingly, the law greatly encouraged emigration to Oregon.
