Territorial Timeline

The Territorial Legislature created Kittitas, Lincoln, Adams, Douglas, Franklin and Skagit counties

On November 24, 1883, Kittitas and Lincoln Counties were created by the Washington Territorial Legislature. Kittitas is an Indian word meaning “gray gravel bank.” Lincoln County was named in honor of President Abraham Lincoln.

Four days later the counties of Adams, Douglas. Franklin and Skagit Counties were created. Adams was named in honor of President John Adams. Douglas County was named in honor of Stephen A. Douglas. Franklin was named in recognition of Benjamin Franklin. Skagit was named in honor of the Skagit Indian tribe.
