||The Role of the Secretary of State in Elections
The Secretary of State is Washington’s chief elections officer. The Secretary supervises state and local elections, certifies primaries and general elections, verifies initiatives and referenda, processes requests for absentee ballots, and distributes copies of election laws and regulations.
The Revised Code of Washington states: “It is the policy of the state of Washington to encourage every eligible person to register to vote and to participate fully in all elections and to protect the integrity of the electoral process by providing equal access to the process while guarding against discrimination and fraud.”
