VOTERS’ PAMPHLET Washington State Elections Presidential Primary March 10 2020 Official Publication Ballots mailed to voters by February 21 (800) 448-4881 | sos.wa.gov On March 10, voters in our state will have the opportunity to participate in Washington’s Presidential Primary. It’s your chance to have your voice heard on the nomination process for the office of U.S. President. The Presidential Primary was created in 1989 as a citizens’ Initiative to the Legislature. In the past, the two major political parties used caucus results to allocate some or all of their delegates to the national conventions, rather than the results of the primary. Additionally, the Presidential Primary occurred in May, well after the field of candidates had been condensed. After years of working with the Legislature to move our primary to an earlier date, lawmakers approved a bill in 2019 to advance the primary to March. Now, Washingtonians will have a greater voice in selecting the nominees for President. For the first time in state history, both major political parties will use the results of the Presidential Primary to allocate their delegates to the national conventions. Candidates from both parties will appear on your primary ballot. It is important to note that you are required to declare a party for the primary contest you’re voting in. The declarations, written by the parties, appear on the return envelope. Without your signature and party selection, your vote cannot be counted. The Presidential Primary is the only statewide election in which you are required to select a political party. I am excited to offer you this special 2020 Presidential Primary Voters’ Pamphlet, and hope you find it helpful in casting your ballot. In the Office of the Secretary of State, we strive to provide a trusted source of information for voters to use in making informed decisions in Washington elections. This pamphlet is one of many resources we provide, which includes information from the candidates about their background and views, as well as contact information for their campaigns. All registered Washington voters are encouraged to participate in this important election. Your ballot return envelope comes with prepaid postage, so you can drop it into either a ballot drop box or any U.S. mailbox. If mailed, your ballot must be postmarked by March 10. Otherwise, you may use an official ballot drop box by 8 p.m. on March 10. For drop box locations and more information, visit our website at sos.wa.gov/elections. That is what I represent. A different temperament. A different set of values. A new direction that will unify the American people. Donald Trump doesn’t care about your kids or mine, and the future of our kids has to be part of every decision we make. Our kids don’t have time for us to waste fighting a losing battle for the next 10 years on a Medicare for All plan that would take insurance away from millions of people and cost trillions of dollars. They don’t need more empty promises of free stuff. Instead, we need to cover everyone in three years and lower costs with the option of buying a government healthcare plan; create economic opportunity; end childhood poverty; and build a climate solution that lasts a generation. It’s up to us to leave more, not less, to the next generation, and that’s why I’m running for President — to expand opportunities to every American and build a better future for all of us. Joseph R. Biden (Democratic Party Candidate) Contact Information info@joebiden.com www.joebiden.com Elected Experience Vice President of the United States; United States Senator from Delaware; New Castle County Council Other Professional Experience No information submitted Education University of Delaware; Syracuse University College of Law Community Service No information submitted Statement Former Vice President Joe Biden believes we are in a battle for the soul of this nation. The current president threatens everything we stand for by fanning the flames of hate groups, dividing Americans, and tearing the fabric of the country apart. The stakes in this election couldn’t be higher, and nothing will change if we don’t defeat the current president. Joe’s parents instilled in him that when you see an abuse of power, it’s your obligation to stand up to combat it. That’s motivated him his entire life - as Senator from Delaware for 36 years and President Obama’s Vice President for 8 years. Joe stood shoulder to shoulder with President Obama to pass the Affordable Care Act, expanding health care for 20 million people. He wrote and passed the Violence Against Women Act, when domestic violence was considered a family matter. He took on the NRA and won – twice – including passing the assault weapons ban. And, he started talking about climate change as a moral issue of our time far before it was a mainstream issue. His vision for America is based on equal opportunity for all. Treating everyone with dignity. A middle class where everyone - regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation, or disability - comes along. As president, Joe will expand on the historic progress of the Obama-Biden administration and rebuild a strong, inclusive middle class. He’ll protect and build on Obamacare with a public option. He’ll restore our standing in the world. Joe has a proven ability to bring people together and to deliver for the middle class. At this defining moment in our nation’s history, it’s going to take Joe’s strong leadership to unite America and move our country forward. He launched national grassroots coalitions to take on pressing challenges, and he created the nation’s first Chief Service Officer role in New York City, mobilizing millions of volunteers and helping more than 270 cities engage citizens in service. Bloomberg Philanthropies works to save and improve lives in 510 cities and 129 countries. Statement Mike Bloomberg is an entrepreneur and three-term mayor of New York City whose innovations in business, government, and philanthropy have made him a pioneering leader on critical issues facing America and the world. He has launched major coalitions to save and improve lives, including America’s largest campaigns to prevent gun violence and fight the climate crisis, and he has championed efforts to fix our immigration system. Elected mayor just weeks after the attacks of September 11, 2001, Mike led New York City’s resurgence. He spearheaded the rebuilding of Lower Manhattan, fought poverty with new programs that became national models, and turned around a failing school system. Mike reduced carbon emissions by 14 percent, increased New Yorkers’ life expectancy by three years, and cut crime by a third while reducing incarceration by 39 percent. Despite the national recession, he led the city to record job growth. After his third term, Mike resumed leadership of Bloomberg LP, the technology and media company he founded in 1981. Bloomberg LP now employs some 20,000 people. Through Bloomberg Philanthropies, Mike applies a unique, data-driven approach to drive progress in five focus areas – education, the environment, public health, and government innovation, and the arts. He has given away $10 billion. Mike grew up in a middle-class home in Medford, Massachusetts. He took out government loans and worked his way through school, graduating from Johns Hopkins University and Harvard Business School. Cory Booker (Democratic Party Candidate) Contact Information (973) 310-7253 washington@corybooker.com www.corybooker.com Elected Experience As the first African American elected to the U.S. Senate from NJ, Cory helped pass laws that are combating mass incarceration and directing investment into vulnerable communities. From 2006 to 2013, he served as Newark’s mayor, where he united a diverse coalition to make change. Other Professional Experience Cory founded a nonprofit that provided legal aid and other services for low-income families. Education Stanford University, followed by the University of Oxford on a Rhodes Scholarship and Yale Law School. Community Service Service and commitment to giving back to his community have and always will be a central part of Cory’s life. Statement Cory Booker has made it his mission to bring people together to do uncommon things since he began his career in public service. As a baby, his parents moved their family to Harrington Park, NJ and battledhousing discrimination to get Cory and his brother into good public schools. Cory’s dad always told him that life isn’t about the degrees you get – it’s about the service you give. And Cory has carried those values with him throughout his career, from his time as Newark’s mayor, to his 2016 DNC convention speech, to the launch of this campaign back in February 2019. This election is about how we can pull together and heal America after years of Trump’s hatred and division. We need a president who can repair the damage Trump has done and make justice and opportunity real for every American. We need a president who is unafraid to tackle the biggest problems in our country, like the gun violence epidemic, the crisis of climate change, a broken criminal justice system, and an immigration system that has separated children from their families. Throughout this campaign, Cory has shown that he has the record, the ideas, and the commitment to take these challenges head on, because he has spent his entire career running at the toughest challenges and bringing people together to accomplish things others said were impossible. In the Senate, he has been on the front lines of efforts to increase wages and ensure hard work is fairly rewarded, expand economic opportunity and protect the rights of all Americans to breathe clean air and drink clean water. When Democrats unite around our shared values, we’ll more than take back the White House – we will restore our sense of common purpose, expanding opportunity, and ensuring justice for every American. As a Midwesterner, mayor, and veteran, Pete offers a different vision of politics and government than we see coming out of Washington, DC. Born in South Bend to a first-generation immigrant from Malta and a fifth-generation Hoosier, Pete grew up in an industrial city still recovering from the loss of its economic engine, Studebaker, decades earlier and the decisions being made in our nation’s capital in the years since. The national press had written off his home town as “dying,” but Pete knew with fresh ideas and a new approach to politics the city could thrive again. As a two-term mayor, Pete reformed government, attracted new business, and made smart investments in the city. Under his leadership, household income rose by nearly a third, poverty fell by a third, and unemployment was cut in half. During Pete’s first term as mayor, he took a leave of absence to deploy to Afghanistan as a lieutenant in the Navy. As president, Pete will offer a new kind of leadership that rallies the American people together behind bold ideas to finally take on climate change, gun violence, stagnant wages, and the other urgent challenges we face before it’s too late. Every single person deserves to be treated with respect regardless of race, religion, or gender, or even your politics. Inclusion, unity, respect, aloha -- these will be the operating principles for my administration. Let us enter into a new century free from the fear of nuclear war, a world where there is real peace, where our people have time to pursue happiness rather than being forced to work constantly just to survive, where we build strong communities that care for each other and the planet. Our economy must not be dependent on war, but driven instead by innovation, green technology and renewable industries. Everyone deserves clean water to drink, clean air to breathe and access to nourishing food; everyone receives the medical care they need, has a roof over their head, receives the education they need and is able to find good paying, fulfilling work. Americans deserve financial security. We live in the richest, most powerful nation in the world. Americans should not have to live paycheck to paycheck, some of us never being able to retire. Our success in life is measured by our happiness and fulfillment rather than accumulation of wealth and status. We love and care for our neighbors, and respect each other regardless of the color of our skin, how we worship or who we love. In this new century, we work out our differences with one another with mutual respect and tolerance; we negotiate with other nations and resolve problems through compromise and diplomacy. We overcome the current pulling us toward war, and usher in a new era of international peace and prosperity built not on conflict but on cooperation. Her grandpa worked 1,500 feet underground in the iron ore mines of northern Minnesota. Her dad was a newspaperman and her mom was an elementary school teacher who taught second grade until she was 70. Her daughter, Abigail, was sick when she was born. Even though Abigail was in intensive care because of insurance rules, Senator Klobuchar was discharged from the hospital after just 24 hours. She took that experience and became the leading advocate for the successful passage of one of the first laws in the country guaranteeing 48-hour hospital stays for moms and their babies. She served as the Hennepin County Attorney for eight years and in 2006 became the first woman elected to the U.S. Senate in Minnesota’s history. In the Senate, she has worked hard to get things done, passing over 100 bills as the lead Democrat. Senator Klobuchar is known for taking on big interests to bring down everyday costs for families and protect consumers. She is working to deliver economic justice to Americans -- focusing on housing, childcare, retirement security and education -- and fighting to protect voting rights. As part of her campaign, she has released a plan outlining over 100 concrete steps she will take in her first 100 days as President to take on the biggest challenges we face, including health care, shared economic prosperity, climate change and restoring America’s standing in the world. Kellogg Foundation’s Truth, Racial Healing and Transformation Enterprise Statement I have had the opportunity to personally live the American Dream, and I’m running for President to ensure the path to that Dream is open to everyone, everywhere. I grew up on the South Side of Chicago, most of that time on welfare, going to big, broken, overcrowded public schools. For all the things we didn’t have, one thing we did have was a strong community. The lessons I learned in that community have guided me in every assignment I’ve taken on. I have two terms of accomplishments and reforms as Governor of Massachusetts, a record of successful leadership in business, a demonstrated commitment to fighting for the most vulnerable as an advocate, and a life that epitomizes the American Dream. We need leadership that’s about bringing us together, not tearing us apart. We need leadership that’s about leaving things better for those who come behind us. We need leadership that understands that unity makes us not only stronger but successful. That’s the kind of leadership that produced results in Massachusetts. We faced the worst economic crisis in a generation and, because we stuck together and made shared sacrifices, we emerged stronger on the other side. I will take that same style of leadership to the Presidency. The public is asking big questions and insisting on big solutions. Renewing the American Dream requires we deliver on our bold campaign proposals: an Opportunity Agenda, a Reform Agenda, a Democracy Agenda, and a Leadership Agenda. More than the character of the candidates is at stake this time. This time it’s about the character of the country. This time it’s about restoring the American Dream so it works for everyone, everywhere. This time it’s about whether we are prepared to do the work of rebuilding our national community, for today and for tomorrow. Bernie Sanders (Democratic Party Candidate) Contact Information (802) 862–1505 info@berniesanders.com www.berniesanders.com Elected Experience Senator Bernie Sanders served Vermont in the House of Representatives for 16 years and, in 2018, was re-elected to his third term in the U.S. Senate. Other Professional Experience Bernie worked as a carpenter and documentary filmmaker before being elected Mayor of Burlington. Education Bernie attended Brooklyn College and the University of Chicago, where he was a leader in the fight against housing discrimination. Community Service Bernie fights tirelessly for working families, focusing on the shrinking middle class and the growing gap between the rich and everyone else. Statement I am running for president as part of an unprecedented and historic grassroots campaign to not only take back the White House, but to build a movement to finally make the progressive change we need. Our campaign is about taking on the powerful special interests that dominate our economic and political life, including Wall Street, health insurance corporations, the pharmaceutical industry, the fossil fuel industry, the military industrial complex, and the private prison industry. Our campaign is building a movement to end racism, sexism, homophobia, religious bigotry and all forms of discrimination. Our campaign is about the humane and just treatment of immigrants. Our campaign is about transforming our country and creating a government based on the principles of economic, social, racial and environmental justice. Our campaign is about creating a government and an economy that work for the many, not just the few. Our campaign is about guaranteeing health care as a human right. I’m running for president because, we need leadership that brings us together – not divides us up. Women and men, black, white, Latino, Native American, Asian American, gay and straight, young and old, native born and immigrant. Now is the time for us to stand together. Make no mistake about it. The powerful special interests in this country have unbelievable power and they want to maintain the status quo. The only way we will win this election and create a government and economy that work for all is with a grassroots movement – the likes of which has never been seen in American history. They may have the money and power. We have the people. Together we can create a nation that leads the world in the struggle for peace and for economic, racial, social and environmental justice. And together we will defeat Donald Trump. Together founded Beneficial State Bank, a community bank loaning money affordably to working people and projects that improve the quality of lives within local communities, and California Food for California Kids. Statement Tom Steyer is running for president to break the stranglehold that corporations have on our democracy. Our government is broken because corporations have bought it, and prioritized their profits over people. The way to fix it is to give more power to the American people. Tom is committed to enacting big structural change through term limits and a national referendum, overturning Citizens United, and ending gerrymandering. He believes we must do this first if we ever want to tackle the big problems facing our country. Combating climate change will be a top priority of a Steyer presidency. He will declare a national emergency on Day One of his administration, using emergency powers to address the crisis. Through his Justice-Centered Climate Plan, Tom will create 46 million jobs over 10 years, prioritizing investments in well-paying union jobs and front line communities. He believes that confronting this existential threat will bring America back together. Tom’s 5 Rights Agenda, a “21st century bill of rights,” enumerates essential rights that every American must have to live in dignity, including universal health care, a fair and equal vote, clean air and water, education, and a living wage. As a self-made billionaire, Tom is the best candidate to go head-to-head with Donald Trump on the economy and expose him for what he is — a fraud and a failure. After starting and growing a successful international investment firm from scratch, he stepped down in 2012 to focus his energy and resources on fighting climate change. His People Over Profits Economic Agenda will make big investments in the American worker, infrastructure, and innovation. She has three older brothers who served in the military, and her oldest brother was career Air Force and flew combat missions in Vietnam. When Elizabeth was twelve, her dad suffered a heart attack. He was out of work and the medical bills piled up. They lost the family station wagon and were about an inch away from losing their home, when her mom got a minimum wage job answering the phones at Sears. Back then, a minimum wage job could support a family of three. That job saved their home, and it saved their family. Elizabeth has spent her whole career studying why America’s middle class has been hollowed out. She fearlessly takes on giant corporate special interests like big banks and credit card companies that cheat consumers and undermine small businesses. She goes after shady for- profit schools that rip off students, veterans, and taxpayers. She relentlessly fights to end the influence of big money in politics. Elizabeth got to become a teacher, a law professor, and the senior senator from Massachusetts because America invested in kids like her. She is in this fight to build an America that works for everyone. Elizabeth and her husband Bruce have been married for 38 years. They have three grandchildren and a golden retriever named Bailey. Andrew was named a Champion of Change in 2012 and an Ambassador of Global Entrepreneurship in 2015 by the Obama Administration. Statement I’m Andrew Yang, and I’m running for President as a Democrat in 2020 because I fear for the future of our country. I’m not a career politician—I’m a job creator who understands the economy. After running a non-profit focused on bringing jobs to struggling communities, it became clear to me that we need to make an unprecedented change as more Americans lose their jobs to automation. I went to Washington, DC, to ask what was being done, but no one provided real solutions to the problem. The establishment isn’t willing to take the necessary steps to address the economy of the 21st century. My priority is to implement the solutions America needs to get back on track. 78% of Americans are living paycheck to paycheck, and 40% aren’t be able to afford an unexpected $400 bill. At the same time, the biggest tech companies are paying $0 in taxes while sucking up more and more money from our local economies. We need to put in place a new system that makes sure Americans get a slice of every Amazon sale, Google search, and self-driving truck mile. By investing this money in ourselves, we can build a trickle-up economy that puts our people first. I’m a parent and a patriot. I have two young boys, and I want to look back at my life knowing I did everything in my power to create the kind of future our children deserve—one with an America of opportunity, freedom, and equality. A crisis is underway—we have to work together to stop it. Once I understood the magnitude of this problem, and that our government was not going to take steps necessary to stem the tide, I had no choice but to act. That’s why I’m running for President. Under President Trump’s leadership, Congress passed historic tax cuts and relief for hard-working Americans. The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act is the first major tax reform signed in 30 years, providing tax relief for 82% of middle-class families and doubling the Child Tax Credit. President Trump is unleashing economic growth and jobs. Since his election, the Trump administration’s pro- growth policies have generated 6 million new jobs, the unemployment rate has fallen to its lowest point in 50 years, and wages have grown at more than 3% for 10 months in a row. The manufacturing industry created nearly half a million new jobs, with 625,000 new construction jobs being created since President Trump took office. The Trump administration prioritized the economic empowerment of women at home and across the globe, launching the Women’s Global Development and Prosperity (W-GDP) Initiative, the first-ever whole-of- government approach focused on advancing women’s full and free participation in the global economy and allocated $50 million for the fund. President Trump is also ensuring our Veterans get the services they need and deserve. This started by signing the Veterans Accountability and Whistleblower Protection Act to allow senior officials in the Department of Veterans Affairs (V.A.) to fire failing employees and establish safeguards to protect whistleblowers In August 2017, the President signed the Harry W. Colmery Veterans Educational Assistance Act, an important step in providing our nation’s heroes the support they have earned. This funded the post-9/11 GI Bill, which provided educational benefits to veterans, service members, and their family members, including tuition, fees, books, housing, and additional costs. 22 Celebrate women of Washington Washington has been Ahead of the Curve since it first granted women suffrage (the right to vote) in 1883. Later revoked, in 1910 our state became the fifth to include women’s suffrage in its constitution — a decade ahead of the nation. Legacy Washington is gearing up for the 2020 centennial of women’s suffrage in the United States by highlighting the pioneering spirit of some larger-than-life women and little- known stories with big impacts on our state, the nation, and beyond. Washington women keep blazing trails in fields from science to bridge building.
