An Advisory Board charged with distributing federal funds to Washington counties to pay for election reforms will meet this week.
The Help America Vote Act Advisory Board, will meet this week to review and make recommendations for distributing federal funds to Washington Counties.
The money is made available through the Help America Vote Act or HAVA. Congress passed the federal act after the 2000 elections debacle in Florida.
Under HAVA, Washington has been issued $60 million to pay for, among other things, the replacement of punch card ballots, the development of a statewide voter registration database, voter education, and electronic voting machines to assist those with disabilities.
The HAVA Grant Advisory Board has scheduled a meeting for Thursday, January 20, 2005 at the Secretary of State, Division of Elections Office located at 520 Union, Olympia Washington from 2 pm to 5:00 pm. The public is invited to attend.
The Board will hear staff recommendations on grant requests from the counties as well as administrative procedures.
Washington Secretary of State Sam Reed has appointed the following members to the Advisory Board:
Thad Duvall – Douglass County Auditor
Kris Swanson – Cowlitz County Auditor
Dean Logan – King County Director of Records, Elections and Licensing
Nick Handy – Representing the Office of the Secretary of State
Doug Cocheran – Former Yakima County Auditor – Member at large
