OLYMPIA -- Secretary of State Sam Reed announced today the appointment of Dean Logan as the state of Washington's new Elections Director. Logan will leave his position as Kitsap County Clerk and bring nearly ten years of elections experience to his new role. As State Election's Director, Logan will oversee all federal, state, and local elections. This division manages state initiatives petition signature checking, the Voters Pamphlet production, other voter information guides, and other election functions.
"Dean Logan has the exceptional experience and talent this important position demands," said Reed. "We need to increase voter turnout. We need to better educate the public on the issues and candidates. Clearly, Dean Logan will prove an asset to citizens in both areas."
Logan served as the initial manager of Washington's successful Certificate and Training Program that helps ensure elections integrity. Created in 1992 after a legislative race recount revealed inconsistencies and accountability problems within three counties, the program has helped improve the accuracy and success of Washington's elections.
As Kitsap County Clerk, Logan is perhaps best known as a champion for services that benefit domestic violence victims. He also implemented an automated records management system that allowed the county to store court records as computerized images for the first time.
"This is great opportunity as State Elections Director to assure the integrity of our electoral process in the state of Washington and to encourage expanded voter education and participation," said Logan. "It is a unique time in our history to be involved in shaping policy related to elections administration and voter registration. I am eager to embrace those challenges--- both within our state and on a national level."
