First Tuesdays: Readers to Eaters
Description:First Tuesdays was designed as a continuing-education opportunity for staff of libraries in Washington State. This free web presentation, from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m., allows attendees to share their skills and successes and learn about new topics. The special-subject presentations, lasting about 60 minutes, are recorded so that others may listen at their own convenience. The definition of what special collections are has broadened over the last few decades, from rare book collections to encompassing photographic, manuscript, audiovisual, and multimedia materials. All of these materials beg to be made digitally accessible. Meanwhile, the media and the profession stress the need for libraries to move forward and be relevant in the wake of increased digital access and information ubiquity. How do special collections fit into a forward-thinking library plan? Bibliophiles may see the necessity of special collection materials as self-evident, but how can the library/archival community make their case to all the stakeholders involved in library planning? We'll discuss the practices of special collections and the traditions of the antiquarian trade and how they align with both the requirements of digital access and the future of the book as a whole. The session also discusses where modern technologies and practices are affecting the special collections world, for better or worse, and how librarians and staff caring for these collections can meet the demands while preserving these unique items.
